Household Budget – Articles Revisited
A household budget is something that all of us should have, whether we’re a household of one or a dozen. Sometimes it’s formal and in writing, and sometimes it’s simply in our head somewhere. If we’re having trouble with making ends meet or deciding what we can and can’t afford, a formal budget might be just the thing we need.
Let’s see how others work with a budget. Our guide for today’s visit to the archive is Brad, who has considerable experience with budgets. Let’s dig in.
Our starting point is a written budget. Brad suggests that it’s a basic as well as essential financial tool if we’re interested in better managing our personal finances. We’re advised that it will take a while to get the hang of it, but it’s well worth a little additional effort.
The next stop on this tour of the archive is a look at zero-based budgeting where Brad suggests that we allocate every dollar on paper and with a purpose. Here we can see the idea of living deliberately, and that’s something I can identify with.
Now it’s time to learn about sinking funds so we’re prepared for irregular expenses. Ah, another concept I can identify with – being better prepared.
Last up for today is using the envelope system. It sounds good to me because it allows you to see and handle the money you’re spending, thus increasing the visibility of money that is going out of your hands into those of another. Just be careful with your cash, a safe in your home is the only place to keep more than “walking around money.”

Next week let’s take a look at simple living as our theme. Sometimes we’re just too caught up in the complexities of life and it can affect our ability to enjoy ourselves. Often we’re the ones who make our lives unnecessarily complex. Next week we’ll learn ideas from others who have focused on simplicity.
