Shelving Without Tools
Constructing shelving without tools can be fun and easy. As a bonus, adding color to any room while improving function in a vertical space can be simple. Here is a photo of our latest project. Using leftover (free) paint and cinder blocks and boards, we constructed a fun and functional shelving unit that has become one of our living room highlights. Best of all, no tools were needed. For less than the cost of a new bookcase, we produced a totally unique and personalized display unit of shelving without tools.
Tools are generally used in the construction of shelves to make the shelves sturdy. An interesting factor about these shelves is that the weight of the cinder blocks allows for a very high and sturdy shelf system. Our picture and reference books have a home on this one, and our CD’s are stored inside the cinder block squares.
They move easily too. Mobility was a concern for us because the flooring is scheduled for an update in the near future; realizing that everything sitting on the floor will need to move before that happens helped determine the need for easy movement. This could also be re-purposed quickly into a couple benches for extra company seating, or bench seating could be quickly constructed using the same materials, yet again without tools.
Is there a down side? Yes. The casual look of our project is reminiscent of college ingenuity and will not portray an upscale image in some rooms. In our home, the fun beach look is exactly what we enjoy and it works for that purpose. It might not impress everyone, but if impressing others is your goal, you might want to keep reading up on the importance of self-reliance and frugality.
